Please do NOT bring:

Braai grids, potjie pots, cutlery, crockery, bedding and bathing towels. All provided.

Please bring:

Beach towels, loo Paper, matches, spices.

If you forget something – there are emergency supplies – just ask.

Entry and departure 

There are no keys or lock up procedures involved. The manager, Nella Coller, has been involved with the property since inception. She will provide a short tour of the property on arrival. If your “ETA” is likely to be later than 5 pm, please let us know, Thanks.

Optional Cleaning Service

A daily / ad hoc cleaning service including laundry is available on request. Pls. make the transaction directly with our staff, who will quote their standard rate.

Mobile Phone and PC Reception

An aerial and repeater are located above the main building (kitchen-Living-Dining-Porch); giving an inconsistent 4-5 bars, sufficient for mobile phone calls, text, emails. Insufficient for Voice-Over- Internet calls.  There is negligible to zero reception outside the building.


Drinking water is supplied from a filtered rain system with a dedicated tap (green marker) in the kitchen. Guests wishing to drink bottled water are encouraged to do so. Top ups can be purchased in Stilbaai, Riversdal and Heidelberg.

Washing and general purpose water is supplied from a nearby spring. Once daily, a member of staff will make the boiler system. Pls. note that the hot water tap in the free standing bath can be near boiling temperature after the boiler has been made. Guests may not operate the boiler under any circumstances – thank you. The plunge pools are filled regularly / at the request of the guest. There are no municipality water restrictions.

Off-Grid Power System

The property is limited to a maximum of 2 kilowatts at any given time. Please do not use hair dryers, electric kettles, electric heaters …or anything with a heating element. If the system trips from an overload it cannot be switched back on from the house DB board. Please call our staff and they will reboot the system from the store.

Fire / Braai Wood

Rooikrans wood is cut on the farm. A bag contains +- 16 pieces and prices are communicated on the invoice. Pls indicate the number of bags required in advance of arrival.  If you run short please ask our staff – cash payments only.


There are braai facilities on the open deck and in the porch area; a small gas oven, gas stove and a cooking hearth located in the kitchen area. Pls. ask our staff to demonstrate how to start the gas oven. For your safety please check that the gas hobs are dialled to the off position after use. The cooking hearth is the best facility ….so go traditional!

Outdoor furniture and Plunge Pools

The watersport gear is located in a store near the river. The kayaks are the fastest crafts and the canoes are the most stable. Please take care of the equipment and report any damages if they occur. There are life jackets available including sizes suitable for children.  Thorn & Feather does not accept liability for injury or accidents.

Pls. rearrange the outdoor furniture and cushions to suit your needs.  There are blankets available for cold nights. Children are to be supervised especially at the swimming pools and on and & around the river. Swimming is at own risk.

Water sports equipment and Access to the Duiwenhoks River

Pls. make use of the private path to the river and keep the river gates closed at all times. There is no jetty (under application). There are poles and steps to assist in mooring watercraft and getting on and off the bank. This area is shallow and slippery. Pls. take care and refrain from diving head first. The river is safe for swimming –> highly recommended.
